SEMARANG – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) has confirmed that the sound of the blows in various places in Central Java, on Monday (11/5/2020) in the morning at 00.45-01.15 WIB, was not caused by seismic activity.

That was after checking the seismic waves from all the BMKG earthquake sensors scattered throughout Central Java.

BMKG’s Head of Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Section Daryono revealed, there are several possible causes for the sound of an accident during an earthquake. The phenomenon of a boom during an earthquake can occur if an earthquake triggers a movement of the ground in the form of a sudden and very fast drag below the surface.

“Another possibility is associated with active fault activity, in this case there is a rock dislocation mechanism that causes energy release to occur suddenly and quickly to cause an explosive sound,” Daryono explained in a press release on Monday. (11/05/2020).

“Especially if rock fractures occur in the valley and canyon or in the area of many rock cavities that allow the sound to be louder due to resonance,” he explained.

He mentioned that several Bantul earthquakes in 2006 also made noise and had bothered residents at the time. “But the sound of the boom that occurred this morning is certainly not due to the activity of the tectonic earthquake,” he concluded.
