LIVE – The University of Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM-UI) finally issued five position statements regarding the issuance of a Joint Decree (SKB) regarding the prohibition of activities, the use of symbols and attributes and the termination of the activities of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

BEM UI Director Fajar Adi Nugroho explained that this critical stance was a manifestation of his party’s consistency with respect to the application of the rule of law concept in Indonesia, as stipulated in Article 1, paragraph 3 of the constitution, that Indonesia is a rule of law.

“Because Indonesia is a rule of law, one of its principles is the protection of human rights, the rule of law and democracy,” he said on Monday, January 4, 2021.

Fajar said that during this year all parties were able to see what things contradicted or degraded the principles of the concept of the rule of law that should be defended.

“In this context, we see that the dissolution of FPI as a social organization is a question for us from BEM UI, if we contextualize Indonesia as a rule of law,” he said.

According to him, the dissolution of the FPI without going through a judicial mechanism shows that there is a state contradiction in the implementation of the concept of the rule of law itself.

“What we are looking for is the Ormas Perppu, which later becomes the Ormas Law that modifies the previous Ormas Law, which is what we call the suppression of democracy,” he said.

This is due to the fact that, Fajar said, the points where the mechanism of dissolution of social organizations is eliminated through justice through this law.

“And, unfortunately, this substance is the basis for the dissolution of the FPI as a social organization,” he said.

His party saw this as a kind of alarm for freedom of association.

“Because it seems to give absolute power to the executive and then dissolve social organizations or mass organizations,” he said.

Fajar emphasized that his party was critical of politics and was not related to support.

“We stand firm in accordance with what was expressed in our position statement, on what we focus on regarding the dissolution of this mass organization, how it is procedural, not on the opinions or issues that are circulating or the accusations that will later be brought to the BEM UI, “he said.

In this case, Fajar continued, his party discussed the bases for the dissolution of social organizations and today, by the way, the context is the FPI.

There are five points that become the BEM-UI position statement, namely:

1. Urge the country to repeal the SKB on the prohibition of activities, the use of symbols and attributes and the cessation of the activities of the FPI and the information of the Chief of Police on compliance with the prohibition of activities, the use of symbols and attributes and the cessation of FPI activities.

2. Condemn all acts of dissolution of social organizations by the State without a judicial process as established by the Ormas Law.

3. Condemn the suppression of democracy and attempts to violate human rights as part of the principles of the rule of law.

4. Urge the state, in this case the government, not to use repressive and arbitrary methods in the future and,

5. Encourage the community to participate in monitoring the implementation of the principles of the rule of law, especially the protection of human rights and the guarantee of democracy by the State.
