Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesia is said to be on the verge of normalizing and establishing diplomatic relations with Israel in the coming weeks. This was stated by Israeli diplomatic sources on Sunday (12/13/2020) citing Times of Israel.

The diplomatic source identified two countries that were in talks before US President Donald Trump resigned from office on January 20, 2021. In addition to RI, Oman is also mentioned.

Israeli Intelligence Minister Eli Cohen also mentioned Indonesia in an interview about normalizing diplomatic relations on Army Radio. This was also reported by the local media. The Jerusalem Post.

Previously, the Trump administration has continued its efforts to attract more Arab and Muslim countries to the Treaty of Abraham. So far, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco have agreed to normalization with Israel.

Israel and Indonesia do not have formal diplomatic relations, but they cooperate in trade and tourism. However, Indonesia bought weapons from Israel in the 1970s and 1980s.

Indonesian soldiers also briefly trained in Israel. In 1993, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin even met with then-Indonesian President Suharto in Jakarta.
