Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Malaysian political drama enters a new round. Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim says Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s government has fallen.

He claims to have won a majority in Parliament to form a government. There will even be an audience with the King of Malaysia, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, for approval.

“No, four, five or six (parliamentary votes) but the majority,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysia Kini on Wednesday (9/23/2020).

“The government of (Prime Minister) Muhyiddin Yassin has fallen. I will get more information after facing His Majesty (Raja) in the near future. God willing,” he said.

The claim came less than seven months after Muhyiddin came to power. Muhyiddin became prime minister after the political turmoil that led to the collapse of the Mahathir Mohamad government.

Currently, the National Bond coalition led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin has 113 votes out of 222 parliamentary votes. However, local media said Anwar favored 123 seats, due to the change in the vote of the United Malaysia National Party (UMNO).

However, he said he would appreciate Muhyiddin’s cooperation. According to him, Muhyiddin’s participation in the new government will ensure a calm and peaceful regime change.

“I welcome him to work together because I have no personal problems with him,” he said.

“Your willingness to cooperate will help ensure a smooth and peaceful transition, and if you are willing to cooperate, you can offer your services through a suitable position.”

The opposition leader’s claim came less than seven months after Muhyiddin came to power. Muhyiddin became prime minister after the political turmoil that led to the collapse of the Mahathir Mohamad government.

Malaysia’s politics have been hot since February 2020. Mahathir Mohamad resigned as prime minister and was later appointed interim prime minister.

He resigned right after Anwar Ibrahim said there was treason in his coalition with Mahathir. At that time, they formed the Pakatan Harapan Coalition.

This coalition is a coalition of parties supporting Mahathir and Anwar consisting of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), UMNO, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan).

Previously, they shared to defeat UMNO led by Najib Razak, last May 2018. At that time, the two reached an agreement that after two and a half years, Mahathir would cede the post of prime minister to Anwar.

However, Pakatan Harapan is said to have lost his vote to other parties, where the parliament formed a new coalition not including politician Anwar Ibrahim. This chaos led to Muhyiddin Nasir as the new Prime Minister after being officially appointed by the King of Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian King’s Palace itself confirmed the postponement of the meeting with Anwar. Because the King is ill and is being treated at the hospital.

“At the time, Al-Sultan Abdullah was still in treatment under the supervision of medical experts at IJN (National Heart Institute”), Istana Negara’s home supervisor Datuk Ahmad Fadil Syamsuddin said in a statement.

Previously, various global institutions gave specific “messages” about Malaysia’s politics and economy. The political heat will be a formidable obstacle to the country’s economy, which investors see as instability.
