The invitation to the World Health Organization (WHO) for Indonesian Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto is a hot topic of conversation. Health Minister Terawan was invited to attend a press conference with the head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, and 3 health ministers from other countries.
Several responses emerged, many of which questioned the meaning of the invitation when the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Indonesia was not yet under control. The death rate is currently 3.4 percent, higher than the world average of 2.5 percent.
In its invitation, the WHO did not mention Indonesia’s success in handling the pandemic. The Minister of Health Terawan was invited to share his experiences because he was considered successful in the implementation of the national IAR (Intra Action Review).
“Actually, this is for learning, not an achievement that claims Indonesia is a success. No,” said the Head of the Professional Development Division of the Indonesian Association of Epidemiology Experts (PAEI), Dr. Masdalina Pane, to detikcom, on Thursday (11/5/2020).

At the IAR, explained Dr. Masdalina, each country reviewed itself based on the guidelines issued by the WHO. Therefore, Dr. Masdalina considered the invitation to Minister of Health Terawan to be natural.
Meanwhile, Griffith University epidemiologist Dr. Dicky Budiman explained that the IAR report was not submitted only by countries that succeeded. For example, Sierra Leone and South Africa also reported RAI, although it was not considered successful.
“Learning is not only from success, but also from failure,” said Dr. Dicky.
