Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has begun to consider reviving the mega-project of the Hambalang sports complex, which has been stagnant for years.

Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali said the government would later transform Hambalang into a “paradise” for high-level and talented athletes. This plan is already on the great agenda of the National Sports Design.

“We will consider viewing Hambalang as a hub for senior athletes and our athletes who are ready to compete,” Zainudin said in a press release on Monday (3/15/2021).

Zainudin emphasized that Hambalang is not the only project that the government will accelerate. “We will create 10 training centers in various areas, and the most basic is talent in elementary school,” he said.

The news that the government will revive Hambalang has been around for a long time. Jokowi, in 2016, visited the Hambalang project in Bogor, West Java.

At that time, Jokowi asked the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) to examine the possibility of continuing with the project. At least, there are two special directions for Jokowi regarding the Hambalang project.

First, the head of state ordered the Development and Financial Supervision Agency (BPKP) to audit the project as a whole. Second, related to technical audits that cover the viability of the project in a structured way.
