LIVE – President Joko Widodo inaugurated six ministers and several vice ministers at the State Palace on Wednesday, December 23, 2020. One of them is the general president of the Ansor Youth Movement (GP), Yaqut Cholil Qoumas or Gus Yaqut, who was appointed Minister of Religion. A number of controversies have influenced Yaqut’s journey thus far. Anything?

Jokowi’s choice to appoint Yaqut as the new Minister of Religion to replace Fachrul Razi, who is also known to be controversial with his comments, was in the spotlight. It is understandable that, before being appointed minister, the figure of Yaqut was also known for his controversy. In fact, they are often accused of being divisive.

Well, this time the editorial team managed to summarize a series of controversial and strange comments, which often generated emotions that were not in line with them.

The most recent thing on my mind, of course, is the case of a LBH complaint directed at Gus Yaqut after the burning of the flag with the phrase tauhid in October 2018. At that time, the Muslim community split in two fields after the fire started by a group of unscrupulous members of NU Banser in Garut, West Java.

Controversy over the title ‘Gus’
Gus Yaqut also clashed with Gus Nur alias Nur Sugi Rahardja, whom he considered contaminating the sacredness of the term ‘Gus’. Yes, the title Gus had a special meaning for the Nahdiyin circles. Not everyone can get the title of Gus.

As is well known, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas himself received the title of Gus because he was considered worthy. For the people of NU, the nickname Gus is an honorary title that is generally attributed to respected figures and has generally been forged in pesantren.

Gus Yaqut himself is indeed an important figure within the body of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), including his position as general president of GP Anshor before he was asked to become the new minister of religion. In fact, he also served as Deputy Regent of Rembang and a member of the DPRD.

Not only that, another fact that is also difficult to deny Gus’s title to Yaqut is the note that he is the son of KH Muhammad Cholil Bisri, one of the founders of PKB. His brother, Yahya Cholil Staquf is also known as a Nahdlatul Ulama figure.

The origin of the name Gus also triggered his enmity with Gus Nur. According to Gus Yaqut, this figure who was known to be very anti-government did not have the criteria to hold the title of Gus. “Gus Nur is shameless, he calls him Gus himself,” said Gus Yaqut’s scathing statement.

At its peak, the fight for Gus only subsided after Gus Nur was threatened with jail time because he was suspected of being a hate speech article and now the process has entered the trial stage.

Long rivalry against the FPI
The figure of Gus Yaqut is also very synonymous with a rival of the FPI, as well as a sign of the existence of ISIS in Indonesia. His figure, considered the most diligent in commenting on the dangers of radicalism, often counteracts the existence of FPI and Habib Rizieq Shihab. Even when HRS returned to Indonesia.

Not only that, Gus Yaqut also openly hinted at the moral revolution echoed by HRS and FPI. Gus Yaqut is not sure that the figure of Habib Rizieq Shihab and his FPI have the power to promote a revolution in Indonesia.

The fact is that Gus Yaqut always echoes the NKRI as a fixed price to combat the maneuvers that the FPI has carried out with its high priest HRS. Not infrequently, Gus Yaqut also sometimes showed the strength of the Banser under his command to compete with the great masses of the FPI.

More recently, Gus Yaqut also immediately sent “troops” to protect the parents’ home of the Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law and Security, Mahfud MD. Mahfud MD’s parents’ house in Sampang Madura was a target of the masses, including members of the FPI.
