Ecuador recorded 5,000 deaths overnight.
Beacon.ID – In the Guayas region, the state most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in Ecuador, when the official figures on the victims of the outbreak were verified and examined, the facts that emerged were surprising.
At least 6,700 people died in the first two weeks of April, making Guayas the most affected area not only in the country but in all of Latin America.
Death is not only related to Covid-19.
Local health services were paralyzed due to the pandemic, and many patients with other health conditions were unable to obtain adequate health services.

Guayaquil, city of corpses
“We have seen people die in cars, ambulances, in their homes, on the streets,” said Katty Mejía, a funeral worker in Guayaquil, the state capital and the largest city in Ecuador, withdrawing from The bbc.
“One of the reasons they are not hospitalized is because of the lack of beds.”
“If they go to a private clinic, they have to pay and not everyone has money,” he said.
During the pandemic in the city with a population of 2.5 million, the funeral home was overwhelmed, with some even having to temporarily close because workers feared they would contract the virus.
Desperate relatives left the body in front of the house, while others left it in bed for days.
The city of Guayaquil also began to run out of space to bury bodies, forcing some people to take the bodies of their relatives to neighboring cities to bury them there.
The need to bury the body is so high that some residents use cardboard boxes as coffins.
Inmates now also make wooden coffins.

‘Failed’ country

Ecuadorian President Lenín Moreno acknowledged that the country had failed to overcome the health crisis.
Until April 16, the government believed that only 400 people had died from the coronavirus.
But after the Corona Virus Combined Task Force collected all the data, the big picture changed.
“With the figures we obtained from the Interior Ministry, public burial sites, civil registry offices and our team, we have counted at least 6,703 deaths in Guayas in the first 15 days in April,” said Jorge Wated, head of the Government task.
“The weekly average here reaches 2,000, so we’ve recorded 5,700 more deaths than usual.”
Not all deaths in Guayas are directly related to Covid-19, some people die from heart failure, kidney problems, or other health problems that worsen the condition because they do not receive immediate treatment.

Secondary impact
This development raises the question throughout the region, will the pandemic have the same secondary impact in other Latin American countries or in other regions of the world with a weak health system?
“Public health in Ecuador has always been a problem. This is one of the weak points in almost all periods of government,” Dr. Carlos Mawyin told the BBC.
He suspects that the Covid-19 crisis is a major storm in Ecuador.
“With a weak health system and a large number of patients, the ICU is quickly paralyzed,” he said.
Ecuador extended the curfew and promised to evaluate more patients.
But for Guayaquil residents who have seen loved ones die, the promise is too late.
