Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The largest ex-World War II bomb found in Poland exploded underwater on Tuesday (10/13/2020). The bomb exploded when the country’s naval divers tried to defuse it.

As a result, more than 750 people were evacuated from the area near the Piast Canal on the outskirts of the town of Swinoujscie, where the bomb was used in World War II.

“The deflagration process turned into an explosion. The object can be considered neutralized, it will not pose any more threat,” said 2nd Lt. Grzegorz Lewandowski, spokesman for the 8th Coast Defense fleet, as quoted by the state news agency PAP. Reuters.

Lewandowski also said that all divers are now out of the danger zone.

The mayor’s spokesman told PAP that no one was injured and that no infrastructure was damaged by the explosion at Swinoujscie, a terminal filled with liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The bomb, called the Tallboy, weighed almost 5,400 kg, including 2,400 kg of explosives. At that time, this bomb was used by the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

The Piast Canal connects the Baltic Sea with the Oder River on the Polish-German border. The bomb was dropped by the RAF in 1945 during an attack on the German cruiser Lutzow.
