This political observer from Indonesia’s Al Azhar University (UAI) added that Amien Rais and Habib Rizieq were a line of popular opposition to the government. “Because of that personal closeness, AR is willing to defend HRS. And that’s perfectly normal,” he said.
However, he said, both Amien Rais and PKS had an equal right to approach HRS. This was said when asked if Amien Rais could overtake the PKS in the corner by approaching Habib Rizieq. “If AR is willing to defend HRS and succeed. That could be that AR can overtake PKS in the corner,” he concluded.

As is well known, Amien Rais was one of the figures he visited when Habib Rizieq returned from Saudi Arabia. It was said that at that time the two were also talking about national politics. In fact, Habib Rizieq joked about asking Amien’s position towards the government. “Pak Amien is still in the opposition, right?” Habib Rizieq asked.
When Habib Rizieq was finally arrested by the police, Amien was one of the loudest voices. Through a series of statements in various videos on the YouTube channel, Amien criticized Habib Rizieq’s arrest and reminded the government of what could happen as a result.

In fact, on Thursday (12/17/2020) Amien Rais along with several figures and activists went to the National Police Headquarters to ask the Chief of Police to release Habib Rizieq. Amien also called on President Jokowi to resign due to various problems, including the alleged violation of human rights in the case of the death of six FPI members.
