After the beheading of a teacher in France sparked by online threats, President Emmanuel Macron urged the European Union to force social media platforms to immediately remove content related to terrorists. Macron is pushing for the European Union to move fast.

“It is urgent and necessary that the European negotiations on the removal of terrorist content from the Internet, within an hour, conclude as soon as possible,” said the French leader after meeting with Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas in Paris, according to the news agency reported. AFP, Wednesday (10/28/2020).

In 2018, the European Union proposed measures to force social media and websites to remove terrorist propaganda one hour after receiving orders from authorities. Otherwise, companies like Facebook and Twitter run the risk of heavy fines.

But negotiations are ongoing, and the internet giant is concerned that Brussels will suppress its lucrative social platforms.

“Terrorist content is not like any other illegal content: it is murder, it is very viral. Therefore, it is a major security problem in the context of the terrorist threat we face,” Macron said.

On October 16, a radical beheaded Samuel Paty near his school on the outskirts of Paris after a weeks-long hate campaign against him for showing cartoons of Prophet Muhammad PBUH to students in class on freedom of expression.
