TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko Widodo gathered all his governors in a virtual conference on Friday morning, October 9, 2020. He asked the governors to explain the Employment Creation Law to the public. Jokowi transmitted the law, which from the beginning of its writing generated controversy.

During the meeting that lasted about an hour, Jokowi invited several governors to speak. He also prohibited all participants from delivering the results of the meeting. Here are the facts about the meeting:

  1. Anies Baswedan did not have a chance to speak

DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said he was not given the opportunity to convey the aspirations of the masses who rejected the Job Creation Law. “We cannot provide information. Because it was all requested from the president and the president’s team,” Anies said while reviewing the damage at the bus stop of the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout Transjakarta, in central Jakarta, on Saturday, October 10, 2020.

According to the president of the Association of Provincial Governments of Indonesia (APPSI) for the period 2019-2023, the meeting went in one direction, because almost all the statements were delivered by President Jokowi. “So those of us who were present were unable to provide information.”

  1. List of governors who had the opportunity to speak

At the meeting, Jokowi only provided an opportunity to speak with five governors, namely Lampung Governor Arinaldi Djunaidi, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, South Sulawesi Governor , Nurdin Abdullah, and the Governor of West Kalimantan, Sutarmidji.

  1. Governors highlighted communication problems

Various sources contacted by Tempo said that four out of five governors who had the opportunity to speak highlighted communication problems as the source of the outbreak of the demonstration. “They feel that they have never been involved in the previous talks, but now they have to confront the masses,” said a source. According to him, only Ganjar did not transmit communication problems. Ganjar only suggested that the government provide simple pamphlets to explain to the public.

  1. Prohibition of disclosing meeting results

The Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, confirmed that the president had prohibited all governors who participated in virtual meetings from explaining this. He stated that he had conveyed the aspirations of the unions in West Java regarding the Job Creation Law to the president at the meeting. “I cannot give the results of the meeting because they will be delivered directly by the president. That is the commitment of the governors,” he told a press conference at the Pakuan state building, Bandung.

In line with Ridwan Kamil, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo was also reluctant to reveal the content of the meeting, although he admitted that he attended the meeting with Jokowi. “Why is it closed, really?” He said when trying to get them to ask for confirmation.

West Kalimantan Governor Sutarmidji admitted that he attended a meeting with President Jokowi. He verbally conveyed that the government would issue a government regulation instead of a law to repeal the Employment Creation Law. The President ordered the regional chiefs to convey their aspirations to him in relation to this rule. “I have transmitted it by letter as it is,” Sutarmidji said.
