Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Flash floods hit Pasawahan village, Cicurug district, Sukabumi, West Java, Monday (9/21) around 5:10 p.m. WIB. A resident’s home was reportedly razed due to the flash flood, and two people were reported missing in the stream.
Raditya Jati, head of the Data Center for Disaster Information and Communication at the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), said the floods were caused by heavy rains that had fallen for some time.
“Temporary monitoring by Sukabumi Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), a unit of the house was washed away and a car was washed away due to this flood,” Raditya said in her written statement.
Raditya said heavy rains caused the Cipeuncit river to overflow its banks and cause flooding.
“The location affected by this disaster is in Cibuntu Village, Pasawahan Village, Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency,” he said.
BPBD Sukabumi is still collecting data on the affected locations. Meanwhile, the BPBD Sukabumi Regency Rapid Response Team (TRC) was at the scene of the incident and coordinated with relevant agencies to carry out evacuations and data collection.
In addition, Raditya said that West Java is a province with the potential for rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds for the next two days, from September 22 to 23, 2020.
People are urged to always be aware of potential hydro-meteorological hazards, such as high winds or tornadoes, floods, flash floods, and landslides. Whirlwinds usually occur when the season changes, from the rainy season to the dry season or vice versa.
Meanwhile, BPBD Sukabumi Regency Operations Control Center (Pusdalops) coordinator Daeng Sutisna said officials were still recording reports of missing persons and damage due to flash floods.
He said that the Cibuntu River, which could no longer accommodate the discharge of water, caused the water to overflow into a series of settlements in the residents, joint officers who arrived at the scene immediately conducted an assessment and carried out a sweep of the two residents who were dragged away.
Until now, several residents are still evacuating to safer places and flash floods are gradually subsiding.
“Even at the scene of the incident, residents are still gathering to anticipate more flooding,” he said.
