JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The family of Maheer At-Thuwailibi stated that the news circulating about the state of torture of the deceased during his detention at the Bareskrim police detention center is not true.

This was relayed directly by Maaher At-Thuwailibi’s brother-in-law Jamal after the funeral process at Darul Quran Islamic Boarding School, Cipondoh, Tangerang, on Tuesday (9/2/2021).

“We want to clear up the news that the deceased was tortured, that is a hoax. So far investigators have treated the deceased well,” Jamal said, quoted by Tribunnews.com, on Tuesday (9/2/2021).

Initially, Jamal intended to fix the problem using his social media account. However, he is concerned that his actions may not reach the wider community.

For this reason, he asked the media for help to convey the true news that Maaher died of illness, not because he was tortured while in custody at the Police Criminal Investigation Detention Center.

“So ask my friends in the media to help counter these deceptions. Many have asked me about it,” Jamal said.

Jamal suspected there were parties that wanted to take advantage of Maaher’s death to stake each other by bringing up the deception.

However, Jamal highlighted the condition of the detention cell in Rutam, Bareskrim Polri, which was unfit to detain Maaher.

He suspected that this was another cause of Maaher’s deteriorating health during his sentence.

“Yes, it is located in the basement. His name is in the basement so the sun does not come in. Also, drugs that must be consumed regularly are cut,” said Jamal.

Previously reported, the National Police confirmed the news that the suspect in the case of hate speech Maaher At-Thuwailibi died at the Police Criminal Investigation Detention Center in South Jakarta on Monday night (2 / 8/2021).

“Yes, it’s true (Maaher At-Thuwailibi passed away),” said Karo Penmas, Police Public Relations Division, when Brigadier General Rusdi Hartono was confirmed on Monday (8/2/2021).

Rusdi said the suspect allegedly died of illness.
