Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Ekonom senior Faisal Basri urged the Indonesian government to take a position on the French president Emmanuel macron who claims that he will not prohibit the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
Faisal himself condemned Macron’s attitude and hoped to apologize to Muslims.
“I condemn the French president. I urge the Indonesian government to immediately adopt the same attitude and apologize to Muslims,” Faisal said through his personal Twitter account on Monday (10/26).
French President Emmanuel Macron is in the global spotlight because of this. Many parties criticized him for insulting Islam.
The controversy began in early October. At the time, Macron spoke about the threat of radical Muslim groups in his country.
He said radical Islamic groups are determined to change the values of liberalism and secularism that have long been applied in France.
“There is a radical Islamic group, an organization that has a method of challenging Republican law and creating parallel societies to build other values,” Macron said at the time.
Shortly after Macron spoke thus, a history teacher, Samuel Paty (47) was beheaded in the Eragny area on October 16. The perpetrator was a young man from China named Abdoullakh Abouyezidovitch (18).
Samuel Paty, before being assassinated, had discussed the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad SAW which later caused controversy. From the beginning he has allowed several Muslim students to leave the classroom if they do not agree with the material he is discussing.
Macron then went to the crime scene. He claimed that the perpetrator was a radical Muslim. According to him, Paty was a martyr for teaching freedom of opinion.
Macron then sparked debate after delivering a statement on Friday (10/23). He said that Islam is “a religion that is experiencing a world crisis.”
“Secularism is the glue for the unity of France. Let us not fall into the trap set by extremist groups, who seek to stigmatize all Muslims,” Macron said.
Macron’s gesture drew criticism from several countries. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Macron needed to monitor his mental health.
Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan also raised his voice. He accused Macron of “attacking Islam” as a result of the statement.
“It is regrettable that he chose to promote Islamophobia by attacking Islam rather than violent terrorists, whether they are Muslims, white supremacists or Nazi ideology,” he said.
