Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, visited Vice President Ma’ruf Amin to report on the plan to develop a sharia bank, which is the result of the merger of three state-owned Islamic banks . Not only, Erick also invited Hery Gunardi, who is currently the CEO of Bank Syariah Mandiri, who has also acted as the Project Management Office (PMO) for the Islamic bank merger since March 2020.
“Alhamdulillah, I received a lot of comments and suggestions when I had a meeting with Vice President @kyai_marufamin to inform the work plan of the Sharia Bank merger together with the Managing Director of Sharia Bank Himbara. Hopefully this plan goes well and God willing it can strengthen the Islamic economy of Indonesia, prosper the people and, of course, the people. Muslims in Indonesia, “Erick wrote on his personal Instagram account @erickthohir, on Tuesday (11/24/2020).

The merged bank is scheduled to begin operations in February 2021 and aims to attract corporate clients and raise funds for the global market. The goal is to enter the financial markets of the Middle East and bring funds from these countries to Indonesia.
“This means that both domestic and international corporations that have turned to conventional financing through conventional banks are expected to also take advantage of Islamic banks,” Masduki said in his official statement.
However, it is also expected that this bank with assets of up to Rs 220 trillion can support microfinance by strengthening waqf microbanks. This is a direct concern of the vice president.
According to him, Ma’ruf hopes that this micro waqf bank can find a business model so that in the future this bank can also grow.
To that end, the Minister of BUMN instructed the Chief Executive Officer of Bank Syariah Mandiri to form a team of four or five people to find and explore the best business model. As a first step, Bank Syariah Mandiri President and Director and his team will visit Islamic boarding schools that have waqf microbanks.
Furthermore, in the future, it is expected that the development of this micro waqf bank can also be assisted in its development using APBN funds.
“But of course, with the principle of prudence, what kind of management should be reviewed, then what kind of pesantren will the waqf microbank develop. I think readiness studies should be done so that it actually develops, so that it does not become funds that were once turned over to a pesantren were lost, “he explained.
