East Timor’s dark day, when the Arab state ‘betrayed’ Palestine

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Several Arab countries open relations with Israel. This left the Palestinians feeling abandoned by their traditional ally.

The Middle East, known for sticking to the old guidelines, is changing rapidly. Especially with the fact that the UAE and Bahrain signed a normalization agreement with the Jewish state at the White House, along with US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday (9/15/2020).

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said it was the darkest day in Arab history. “It was a dark day,” Reuters said.

Wrong strategy?

However, observers think the proposal is too slow and the Palestinian position could become increasingly isolated. The Palestinian strategy has been to hold Israel accountable in international law courts and to try to break from American rule.

“There is very little indication that the (Palestinian) leadership is considering breaking away from its (current) approach,” said Tareq Baconi, an analyst at the International Crisis Group.

“Arab and European support in that strategy is very important, but it is questionable whether the Palestinians can secure it to ensure just security.”

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) of the West Bank authorities said that the Palestinian strategy to achieve statehood in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza would not change.

“To remain on the basis of international law, international legality, to seek peace based on the cessation of the Israeli occupation and a two-state solution … we cannot leave this ‘square’,” Saeb Erekat said.

The United States through Trump Advisors, who is also his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, told the Al-Quds newspaper that the idea of ’Palestine’ is lagging behind. At least that was revealed in the last interview of 2018.

“The world has moved on while you (Palestine) are left behind. Don’t let your grandfather’s conflict determine the future of your children,” he said.

In the last peace between the UAE and Israel last week, Khusner even accompanied the delegation from Tel Aviv to Abu Dhabi. She then went on to tour other countries in the Gulf region, with the aim of “attracting” more countries to join the initiative, despite criticism.

There are still other Arabs

The conflict between Israel and Palestine has raged for decades. However, it has been further reduced since 1947, when the United Nations divided the territory into three parts, one for Jews, one for Arabs, and one for the international territory of Jerusalem.

The Arab-Israeli war had occurred. Then there was another war in 1967, in which Israel defeated Egypt, Syria and Jordan and put the West Bank and East Jerusalem in Israeli hands.

So far, annexations continue to occur in the West Bank. Access to another Palestinian territory, Gaza, is also blocked due to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the region’s political leader.

Although the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain open diplomatic relations, several other Arab countries still insist on Palestinian independence. Saudi Arabia, for example.

King Salman even warned Trump about Palestinian independence during a phone conversation between the two in early September. At the time, Trump convinced him to do the same for Israel.

The Arabs will only normalize relations with Israel as long as there is a deal for a Palestinian state. This is in accordance with the actual 2002 proposal.

“Israel must also fully withdraw troops from the territories occupied since the 1967 Middle East war,” he said, according to Reuters.
