JAKARTA – PP Muhammadiyah Secretary General Abdul Mu’ti asked the public not to go overboard in responding to the dissolution of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) by the government. According to him, government action does not mean anti-Islam.
“People do not need to behave and overreact. What the government is doing is not anti-Islamic action. It is enforcing laws and regulations,” Abdul Mu’ti wrote on his Instagram account, @abe_mukti, on Wednesday.
According to Mu’ti, if the FPI ban is due to not having a permit or a Registered Certificate (SKT) has expired, then the social organization (Ormas) can automatically be declared non-existent or illegal.
“So actually, the government doesn’t need to dissolve it because legally the FPI has been dissolved,” he explained.
The important thing, he said, is that the government is fair. Don’t just be strict with FPI, leave other organizations without an SKT, or engage in disruptive activities.
“Likewise, if there is an organization whose activities are disturbing to the public, they like to sweep up and take justice into their own hands. Everything must be dealt with firmly. The law must be enforced by all of them, ”Mu’ti said.
Meanwhile, PP president Muhammadiyah Abdul Munir Mulkhan supported the FPI ban because its existence was not legal.
“A firm stance is needed in the application of the law in a critical social situation like this. Obviously this is in accordance with the law of mass organizations,” he said.

In addition, he said, the government must educate FPI members to be more just as citizens of the nation. On the other hand, Mulkhan said, the FPI should be open to the development of dialogue and more persuasive in the implementation of sharia in the midst of the plurality of Islam among Muslim citizens.
The government has officially banned all FPI activities. The government says that the FPI now has no legal position as a mass organization. The decision is said to be in line with Constitutional Court (MK) decision No. 82 / PUU112013 of December 23, 2014. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud Md, asked all security forces to reject any activity of the mass organizations on behalf of the FPI.
“With the ban and without legitimacy for central and regional officials, if there is an organization on behalf of the FPI, it does not exist and it should be rejected,” Mahfud said at a press conference in his office on Wednesday.
