Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Various legal cases against the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and its leaders, Rizieq Shihab, which led to the dissolution of the organization on Wednesday (12/30), could actually broaden public sympathy.
The dissolution of the FPI was decided by a joint decree (SKB) signed by six ministerial officials and heads of state institutions. Those who signed the SKB were the Minister of the Interior, Tito Karnavian, the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly, the Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G Plate, the Attorney General ST Burhanuddin, the head of BNPT Boy Rafli Amar and the Chief of the National Police, General Idham Azis.
“To declare that the FPI is an organization that is not registered as a mass organization as regulated by law, so that it has de jure dissolved as a mass organization,” said Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej , when reading the SKB on the dissolution of the FPI.
With SKB, the existence of FPI is no longer recognized. All activities can be dismissed by the police.
Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) political researcher Wasisto Raharjo Jati said the government was only able to dissolve and procedurally ban the FPI.
The name of the Islamic Defenders Front is prohibited, but it will not be able to reflect the ideology that drives the organization that was formed on August 17, 1998. Likewise, the figures will not be buried only by the dissolution policy of the FPI.
“In the future, they may establish a new version of the FPI organization. The term Neo FPI or FPI Perjuangan is similar to when Megawati’s PDI was founded. They will develop as a cross-interest organization that is populist,” Wasis told CNNIndonesia. .com, Wednesday (12/30).
“It could be that later the word ‘Laskar’ or ‘Umat’ is used, which means more persuasive than ‘Front’ and ‘Islam’, which are considered exclusive and offensive,” Wasis added.
In response to the dissolution, FPI is considering the option of forming a new organization under a different name. According to Wasis, the new version of FPI has a chance to grow into a larger organization.
The new version of the FPI, he said, could become a more inclusive forum to cover all of President Joko Widodo’s political opponents. This, according to him, was possible because in the past the FPI had a specific political agenda and mission.
“I think this new version of the FPI will become a kind of umbrella organization for all of Jokowi’s political opponents. It could be a kind of America or Pak Amien’s Ummah Party being invited to work together,” Wasis said.
Prior to its dissolution, the FPI and Rizieq Shihab had received several legal cases. The most recent is a case of alleged aggression against the security forces.
This case resulted in the shooting of 6 FPI soldiers on the Cikampek toll road. A total of 6 FPI laskar were killed by hot lead from the police.
The FPI denied that its troops attacked the police. On the other hand, FPI believes that the police attacked and shot his laskar dead.
In another case, FPI General Secretary Munarman was denounced to Polda Metro Jaya by the president of the Indonesian Army Front, Zainal Arifin. Munarman was suspected of having committed an act of incitement because he called the six FPI soldiers who were shot unarmed.
Rizieq Shihab was charged with various articles related to the crowd case in Petamburan and Megamendung. His pesantren at Megamendung, he recently received a citation from PTPN VIII.
Most recently, the South Jakarta District Court Judges Panel decided to revoke the Investigation Termination Letter (SP3) in the case of an alleged unpleasant conversation with suspect Rizieq Shihab.
According to Ujang Komarudin, a political observer from the University of Al Azhar Indonesia, the dissolution of the FPI and the legal pitfalls against its figures, Ujang Komarudin has the potential to elevate the name and movement of the FPI in the future.
With these various legal pitfalls, Ujang said, the public could even perceive the Rizieq cs as people who were “harmed” by the government.
Rizieq’s perception of ‘being wronged’ can be effective in increasing public support and sympathy. Also, Ujang said, some Indonesians are happy to provide sympathy and support for people who describe themselves as being persecuted.
“Because according to natural law in politics, whoever is pressured and will survive, will grow up and gain sympathy,” Ujang said.
Another factor that could foster greater sympathy for FPI is the attitude and position of the organization in dealing with the government.
He said that the position of the FPI as a very strategic opposition. The FPI makes a difference when most mass organizations and political parties form a coalition with the government.
The role played by FPI is also successful. The FPI may become one of the few mass organizations that represents the voice of some Muslims’ anxiety about the condition of the country.
“At the same time, there are no other organizations, other mass organizations that are considered to represent the public to convey these aspirations. And the FPI can assume that role. So, the public disappointment with the DPR against the government, it is the FPI who it is considered to be carrying out those aspirations, “he said.
Ujang assessed that the FPI will become a political threat to certain groups and the government if its supporters grow in the future.
“Now this pattern of arrests is taking place. This pattern does not solve the problem, they can grow even if their figures are imprisoned,” Ujang said.
Ubedillah Badrun, a sociologist at Jakarta State University, believes that whether or not the FPI is large in the future will be determined by the government’s ability to manage groups with different points of view.
The government, Ubdeillah said, must be careful when taking action against the FPI and its opposition groups.
“So if the public sees that the government is wrong in positioning the FPI and HRS, then HRS will get more sympathy from the public,” he said.
Ubed assessed that the legal action against Rizieq Shihab and the FPI figures so far is inappropriate and irrational. “We should seek what he wants with the dialogue. With that we can understand the position of the other,” said Ubed.
