Manchester United successfully entered the semi-finals of the 2020/2021 Premier League Cup. The Red Devils beat Everton 2-0 with two goals late in the game.

In the quarterfinal match at Goodison Park on Thursday morning (12/24/2020) WIB, Everton and MU played a goalless draw in the first half. MU seemed more dominant with 65 percent ball possession.

Apart from that, MU also created 19 attempts, eight of which were aimed at goal and Everton only made seven attempts. The game looked set to culminate in a penalty shoot-out, before Edinson Cavani found Everton’s goal in the 88th minute.

Anthony Martial’s goal in injury time secured MU’s qualification for the semi-finals of this competition, after Manchester City, Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur.

The course of the match

Both teams are dropping their best team lineup, but MU is more dominant over Everton because they can hold down their opponents from the opening minutes. Donny van de Beek nearly broke Robin Olsen’s arc if Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot was not blocked on goal.

In the 16th minute, Cavani had two straight chances after a cross from Alex Telles. Cavani’s first shot was stopped by Olsen, but the Uruguayan took the rebound again before being saved by the Everton goalkeeper.

So was Telles’ opportunity in the 24th minute when he led Yerry Mina in an aerial duel to head a Mason Greenwood cross, though he still hit the post.

Everton’s best chance came from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free kick in the 37th minute when Dean Henderson had to fly to avoid it.

After a scoreless record in the first half, MU is still hard to match Everton in the second half. Once again, the hosts are still struggling to develop the game.

To score the goal, MU played Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial alongside Cavani. After almost no significant chances in this round, MU suddenly made the Everton fans shut up in the 88th minute.

MU builds attacks quickly to get closer to the penalty area. Martial gave the ball to Cavani, who entered from the right, and finished with a left foot that went to the right corner of the net.
