The number of citizens of South Korea (South Korea) who died after receiving the flu vaccine continues to increase. At least 13 South Koreans have died after receiving flu shots in recent days. According to official reports and local media, it raises concerns about the safety of the vaccine even when authorities control the link.

South Korean health authorities said Wednesday they do not plan to suspend a program to vaccinate about 19 million people for free, after a preliminary investigation into six deaths found no direct link to the flu vaccine.

South Korean officials said no toxic substances were found in the vaccine and that at least five of the six people investigated had congenital conditions.

As reported by the news agency Reuters, Thursday (10/22/2020), authorities previously reported nine deaths after flu vaccination and the Yonhap news agency reported another four deaths this Thursday (10/22).

The deaths, including those of a 17-year-old boy and a 70-year-old man, occurred just a week after the free influenza vaccination program for adolescents and the elderly was restarted.

The program was suspended for three weeks after it was discovered that around 5 million doses, which needed to be refrigerated, had been exposed to room temperature while being transported to medical facilities.

South Korean vaccines come from a variety of sources. Manufacturers include local drugmaker GC Pharma, SK Bioscience and Ilyang Pharmaceutical, along with France’s Sanofi and Britain’s GlaxoSmithKline. Distributors include LG Chem and Boryung Biopharma, a unit of Boryung Pharm.

South Korean officials say 8.3 million people have been inoculated with the free flu vaccine since they resumed on Oct. 13, and about 350 cases of adverse reactions have been reported.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the highest number of deaths related to seasonal flu vaccination was six in 2005. Authorities say it is difficult to make comparisons with previous years because more people are taking the flu vaccine this year.
