Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic deeply affected PT PLN (Persero). Although since July 2020 it is claimed that the demand for electricity has started to increase compared to the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in April, it appears that this does not have a significant impact on the performance of the company. In fact, the Minister of Public Enterprises (BUMN), Erick Thohir, has also intervened to solve this problem.
Based on documents received by CNBC Indonesia, Erick Thohir sent a letter to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, to support PLN’s operations and finances.
In the letter of September 18, 2020, Erick asked the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources to help the performance of PLN, limiting the granting of commercial permits for the supply of electricity and captive energy. It is an effort to increase the demand for electricity to overcome the excess supply from power plants.
“We look forward to your support to encourage business actors to use the electricity provided by PT PLN (Persero), among others by limiting the granting of commercial permits for electricity supply and captive powerErick said in the letter. The content of the letter check here.
The content of the letter indicates that PLN customers, be they industrial, commercial, government or household companies, are prohibited from using existing independent power sources and are asked to use only PLN electricity sources.
CNBC Indonesia has tried to confirm this matter to PLN and the government, but there has been no response.
Previously, PT PLN (Persero) Director of Capital and Management, Syofvi Felienty Roekman, said that PLN experienced a very drastic contraction in electricity sales within two to three months of the onset of the pandemic. He said electricity sales fell significantly by minus 10%.
“The first two or three months (of the pandemic) our demand (demand) fell quite significantly to minus 10%. We have never experienced this. I have been in PLN for 27 years with negative growth of minus 10%, we felt it yesterday” explained at the NGOPI event. BUMN online, Thursday (09/24/2020).
Syofvi said that the drop in electricity sales had an impact on PLN’s financial situation, which became difficult. However, in recent months, sales have started to improve, although they are still negative 2%.
It is projected that by the end of the year, electricity sales in PLN will improve, that is, at least 0.5% minimum. However, PLN, Syofvi said, has two scenarios, namely an optimistic and a pessimistic scenario with a range of electricity sales of minus 0.5% to 0.5% positive by the end of 2020.
“We project that the negative end of the year will be minus 0.5%. But we are trying to stay positive, we have optimistic and pessimistic scenarios in the range of minus 0.5% to 0.5% plus (positive). positive growth of 0.5%. Expectations with all efforts at the end of this year. But the position so far is about minus 2%, “he explained.
