Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China’s relentless supply of local vaccine injections to various countries raises questions. At a time when rich countries are struggling to buy limited supplies of vaccines, Chinsa is even “selling” the vaccines it makes.
This, according to several observers, cannot be separated from the rewards that the country wants to obtain in the future. China is said to want a long-term diplomatic comeback.
“There is no doubt that China is practicing vaccine diplomacy in an effort to repair its tarnished image,” said Huang Yanzhong, senior global health researcher at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).
“It has also become a tool to increase China’s global influence and overcome … geopolitical problems.”
“President Xi Jinping’s decision to offer Chinese vaccines around the world as a ‘public good’ also enables Beijing to present itself as a leader in world health.”
The strategy carries many benefits that can distract anger and criticism over China’s initial handling of the pandemic. This includes raising the profile of biotech companies and strengthening and expanding their influence in Asia and beyond.
China initially faced harsh criticism due to its handling of the outbreak of the corona virus in Wuhan. Some countries even criticized China for being dishonest at first about this virus.
But now, China controls the epidemic more advanced than others. Not to mention the hype in the government media that normal life has returned to China.
“Chinese ‘vaccine diplomacy’ is not unconditional,” Ardhitya Eduard Yeremia and Klaus Heinrich Raditio said in an article published this month at Singapore’s Yusof Ishak Institute.
“Beijing can use its vaccine donation to advance its regional agenda, particularly on sensitive issues such as its claims in the South China Sea (SCS).”
