‘Catastrophe’ Macron, European leader in quarantine

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – French President Emmanuel Macron becomes the latest national leader to test positive for the crown (Covid-19). The announcement was officially made by the president’s office on Thursday (12/17/2020).

This has forced several European politicians to self-quarantine as the continent faces a coronavirus death toll that continues to rise to more than 500,000. Europe is battling a winter wave that has put the region back at the ‘heart of the pandemic’ after early 2020.

Macron shows symptoms including fever, cough, and fatigue. He is now isolated for seven days, according to French regulations.

“He will continue to work and carry out remote activities,” his office said in a statement. AFP. Now the president, who had clashed with the Turkish leader Erdogan, left the Elysee palace and headed for his residence at La Lanterne, Versailles, Paris.

The test results now rank the 42-year-old leader with US President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who were previously infected. Both were hospitalized after contracting them.

The positive news for Macron has caused several of Europe’s top politicians to isolate themselves as well. This is because this week is a busy week, in which Macron met face-to-face with various European leaders at a meeting in Brussels to discuss the budget and Turkey.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and the European Council Charles Michel are now self-isolated.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo initially went into self-isolation. But after his test came back negative, he said he would go back to work this Friday.

The same goes for the Irish Prime Minister, Micheal Martin. The German leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, was also negative.

Blockade of europe

Several European countries have returned to social restrictions, from tightening their status, curfews to emergency shutdown. Regional leaders fear the Christmas holidays will blow up the cases.

Germany entered a partial lockdown this week. On Thursday, 30,000 cases of infection were recorded in Panzer Country and set a record. Poland will also do the same for three weeks. Only essential stores are allowed.

Meanwhile, Denmark, France, Turkey and the Netherlands have tightened the restrictions. Bulgaria has even said that it will tighten restrictions until the end of January.

The European Union itself will begin its mass vaccinations on December 27, a vaccine announced by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“This is a European moment. On December 27, 28 and 29 vaccinations will begin throughout the EU,” he said.

Vaccines are now a hope to end the cycle of spike in Covid-19 cases. The virus that first broke out in Wuhan China has devastated the economies of many countries around the world.
