The US statement comes amid reports that Jordanian security authorities arrested several former officials and members of the royal family for allegedly staging a coup.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Washington was closely monitoring developments in Jordan. He then made sure that King Abdullah had the full support of the United States.
“We continue to follow the reports and in contact with Jordanian officials. King Abdullah is a key partner of the United States and he has our full support,” he said, Al Arabiya reported on Sunday (4/4/2021).
Earlier, The Washington Post reported, Jordanian authorities arrested nearly 20 other people after what officials described as a “threat to the stability of the country.”
King Abdullah II’s half-brother, Prince Hamza bin Hussein, was reportedly one of those arrested. However, Jordan’s military commander, Yusef Huneity, denied this.
But, Huneity said, he had warned Hamza to immediately halt activities aimed at Jordan’s security and stability. Also read: Suspicion of coup, several former officials and members of the Jordanian government arrested
Hamza himself said in a video recording that he was under house arrest and had been told to stay home and not be allowed to contact anyone.
Meanwhile, a former US official with knowledge of the events in Jordan said the plot, which he described as credible and broad-based, did not involve a “physical hit.”
Instead, he said, those involved planned to launch what appeared to be a “popular uprising with the masses in the streets” with the support of tribal groups in Jordan. Also read: Washington urges Tehran to release all detained US citizens
