Brief Profile of FPI Leader Habib Rizieq Shihab

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – Habib Rizieq Shihab has the full name of Muhammad Rizieq Hussein Shihab. He was born in Jakarta on August 24, 1965.

Rizieq is known as the President General of the Organization of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), who declared on August 17, 1998.

When Rizieq Shihab attended high school in Islamic Village, Tangerang, then he continued at the level of the Arabic Language Diploma in Saudi Arabia. The College specialized in Islamic Law Education at King of Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He also continued his Masters and PhD degrees at the International Islamic Nation University, Malaysia.

Rizieq Shihab was director of Madrasah Aliyah Jamiat Kheir school, Jakarta, then became the Sharia Council of BPRS At-Taqwa, Tangerang, then became president and director of Markaz Syariah and until now is the president of Front Islamic Defenders (FPI).

He once won the Ulama awards of the 2018 Moeslim Choice Awards category. On March 19, 2009, he was awarded the Supreme Mufti of the Sultanate of Sulu Darul Islam with the title of Datu Paduka Maulana Syar’i (DPMSS).

Rizieq Shihab was recorded to have been sentenced to 7 months in prison by a judge of the Central Jakarta District Court in August 2003 for a case of insults to the Indonesian police through dialogue on a television station.

On October 30, 2008, Rizieq Shihab was sentenced to one and a half years in prison in connection with the assault on the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Belief in the Monas incident on June 1, 2008.
