The US aircraft company Boeing recommended grounding its model 777 worldwide after one of these models suffered an engine failure in Denver.
There were 82 of these 777 model aircraft, used by airlines in the United States, Japan, and South Korea.
Garuda Indonesia Airline also operates the Boeing 777, but it is different from the one that suffered an engine failure in Denver.
Garuda’s chief director, Irfaniaputra, through a statement to BBC News Indonesia said: “What we have [model] 777-300ER is not 777-200 [seperti yang mengalami insiden di Denver]. “
“Engine Our (engine) is from GE, not Pratt & Whitney. God willing, it’s safe, “Irfan said.
He explained that the 10 B777-300ER aircraft operated by Garuda “have met the airworthiness criteria” under the provisions aircraft maintenance manual under the supervision of the Directorate of Airworthiness and Aeronautical Operations (DKPPU).
The plane that was damaged in Denver on Saturday (02/20) was carrying 231 passengers.
The engine damage forced the plane back to the Denver airport. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
Initial findings suggest there is damage fan blade motor on the Boeing plane.
Irfan said that the Type B777-200, which suffered engine failures in Denver, was different from the B777 series fleet that Garuda Indonesia currently operates, namely the Type B777-300ER.
“It basically has specs engine which is different, where the B777-300 ER aircraft currently operated by Garuda Indonesia uses the GE90-115B type engine manufactured by the manufacturer General Electric, ”said Irfan.
United Airlines and two Japanese airlines have said they have stopped operating 62 of their 777 models.
Korean Air said they would grounding against six planes.
‘Everything must be prohibited from flying’
Boeing said that in total there were 182 planes using engines like the ones with engine failures in Denver and that all should be on the ground.
The plane in trouble in Denver used an engine made by Pratt & Whitney.
“While the investigation is in progress, we recommend temporarily suspending the operations of the 69 aircraft currently in operation and the 59 aircraft in the Model 777 hangars using Pratt & Whitney 4000-112 engines,” said a statement issued by Boeing.
Pratt & Whitney said they had sent a team to work with investigators.
According to the federal aviation agency FAA, United Airlines is the only airline in the United States that operates the 777 model. Outside the United States, this model is used by airlines in Japan and South Korea.
In these two countries, all Boeing 777 aircraft with Pratt & Whitney engines are prohibited from entering their airspace until further notice. The ban covers takeoffs, landings and flights.
The Japanese government ordered JAL and ANA airlines to stop using all Boeing 777 aircraft using Pratt & Whitney model 4000 engines.
Last December, JAL flights were forced to return to Naha airport due to a malfunction in the left engine. This plane is the same age as the one that experienced the outage in Denver, which is 26 years old.
The plane that experienced engine trouble on Saturday (02/20) was United Airlines Flight 328, which was supposed to carry passengers to Honolulu.
The FAA said the plane had a starboard engine failure. Debris from the crashed plane covered a residential area in Denver.
The FAA then ordered further inspections of all Boeing 777s powered by Pratt & Whitney 4000 engines after the incident.
Preliminary findings from the US National Transportation Safety Agency (NTSB) suggest that the most serious damage was the starboard engine. The main body of the aircraft also suffered minor damage, the NTSB said.
In 2018, the right engine of a United Airlines plane failed moments before landing in Honolulu.
