Climate change and improving international relations are priorities
The most significant change in political direction was the appointment of Kerry as the president’s special envoy for climate change issues.
While serving as US Secretary of State under the Obama administration, Kerry was a key driver of the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Climate Agreement, two agreements that Trump immediately canceled when he took office.
Trump declared both agreements to be a failure of American diplomacy and called Kerry the worst secretary of state in American history. “
In response to his nomination by Biden, Kerry said the United States will soon have a government that treats the climate crisis as an urgent threat to national security.

“I am proud to be working with the President-elect, all of our allies and the young leaders of the climate movement to address this crisis as the President’s envoy for climate,” added Kerry.
Blinken, who is nominated as the new US Secretary of State, has also served as Assistant Secretary of State and Assistant National Security Adviser during the Obama administration.
If confirmed by the Senate, Blinken will become a major force for the new American administration to improve international relations, especially with long-time American allies, whom the Trump administration has sidelined for four years.
