US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his party had established a mechanism that would require the approval of senior Chinese diplomats in the United States to visit university campuses and meet with local government officials. In addition, China must seek the permission of the US State Department if it wants to organize events involving 50 or more people, at its embassy or consular office.
“For mutual reasons, the United States imposes unjustifiable restrictions and barriers on Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel,” the embassy said in a statement, Xinhua reported on Thursday (3/9/2020).
This, the Chinese Embassy said, trampled on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, and China is firmly against it. (Also read: Chinese military bases in Indonesia can corrupt free and active politics)
“It also goes against America’s self-proclaimed values of openness and freedom. “We urge the US side to correct its mistakes, withdraw this decision, and provide support and facilitation for Chinese diplomatic and consular personnel in the United States to also carry out their functions,” he said.
