KOMPAS.com – The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) warned of the possibility of extreme weather events occurring in various parts of Indonesia.
This extreme weather is expected to occur from November 21-26, 2020.
BMKG Meteorology Deputy Guswanto explained that cyclonic circulation was observed in the Indian Ocean west of Aceh, in the West Indies of Bengkulu and in the Strait of Karimata.

This cyclonic circulation forms an area of convergence that extends into the waters of northern Aceh, from northern Sumatra to the western waters of Bengkulu, in the north of the Karimata Strait and from central Kalimantan to the south of the Karimata Strait.
“This condition may increase the potential for rain cloud growth around the cyclonic circulation area and along the converging area,” Guswanto told Kompas.com on Saturday (11/21/2020).
The results of the BMKG analysis, he continued, show that the dynamics of the unstable atmosphere in the coming week may increase the potential for rain cloud growth in various regions of Indonesia.
“This condition is reinforced by the activation of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, the equatorial Rossby wave and the Kelvin wave in Indonesian territory in the period of next week,” said Guswanto.

Extreme weather
Based on these conditions, BMKG predicts that over the next week several regions of Indonesia have the potential to experience extreme weather and heavy rains that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
Guswanto appealed to the public to remain vigilant and beware of the possibility of extreme weather conditions such as tornadoes, heavy rain accompanied by lightning, hail, and others.
“(In addition to) the impacts it can cause are flooding, landslides, flash floods, puddles, high winds, downed trees and slippery roads,” he said.

Lightning prone areas
Meanwhile, the Head of the Weather Early Warning Branch of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that in the period from November to December, the intensity of the lightning that occurred on the island of Java was the highest in compared to other regions of Indonesia.
“Including the areas of East Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, West Java and Banten,” Agie said when contacted Kompas.com, Friday (11/20/2020).
Agie said that, on average, in the November-December period the intensity or frequency of the lightning strikes occurring on the island of Java will increase.

“This condition is inseparable from the change of seasons, towards the rainy season in Java, which is indicated by the presence of the Asian monsoon that does come at the end of the year,” he said.
So, Agie said, BMKG assessed that this condition should be of concern to the public. Because the frequency of occurrence of lightning will increase and even in some areas there will be a much higher number of lightning strikes.
“If we look at other statistical data, actually the data on lightning incidents from July to August is mainly in the Sumatra region,” Agie said.
He added that in the transition phase of this season quite a few cumolonimbus clouds formed, which were also accompanied by lightning and strong winds.
