Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained by the army, called on the Myanmar public to reject a coup launched by the army. Suu Kyi also encouraged Myanmar citizens to protest the coup.
As reported Reuters Y Associated PressOn Monday (1/2/2021), the statement was released by the National Democratic League Party (NLD) through the Facebook account of Suu Kyi, who is the leader of the party that now governs Myanmar.
“This military action is an act of returning the country to a dictatorship,” said the statement, which included Suu Kyi’s name.
“I urge people not to accept this, to respond and protest wholeheartedly against the military coup,” the statement added.
This statement also said that Myanmar’s military actions were unjustified and contrary to the constitution and the votes of the people who became voters in the elections.
The Myanmar army detained Suu Kyi and President Win Myint in the early hours of Monday (1/2) morning local time. Several senior government officials, NLD legislators and several ministers from Myanmar’s main states were also reportedly detained.
In a statement on its own television, Myawaddy Television, on Monday (1/2) local time, the Myanmar military announced that it was seizing power and establishing an emergency period for one year.
