Prosecutor George Brauchler said that when he saw this case, he saw the gruesome and cruel murder of his mother by her daughter.
“I’ve never seen anyone stab so many times. They stabbed him more than 150 times. So you want that person to be held accountable,” he said. Daily mail, Monday (7/9/2020).
“But our system is a system that is not only loaded with punishments or imprisonment, but is linked to justice. You have to look at this component, which is mental health,” said Brauchler.
“The bottom line is that he has a mental illness that prevents him from developing the ability to distinguish right from wrong, both legally and morally,” he said.
Meanwhile, in her testimony, Dr. Richard Pounds said, Isabella Guzman was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
“There were clear signs of hallucination. He stared into space, talked to people who weren’t there and laughed to himself,” Pounds said.
Brauchler called it a difficult decision. He said that in this case, he believed that based on the evidence he had seen, Guzmán did not distinguish right from wrong.
“I’m sure of that. For the sake of justice, I must take these steps,” he said.
