Alert! BMKG: Volcanoes in Indonesia can cause tsunamis, see any area

LEFT CIRCLE – The head of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, said the potential danger from a tsunami, especially in parts of eastern Indonesia, is caused by volcanoes.

Dwikorita relayed that the facts and data show that the tsunami was not only caused by the earthquake, but could also be caused by a volcano.

“Although approximately 90% are caused by earthquakes. But the trend is that since 2018 there have been tsunamis caused by volcanoes,” he said in a virtual meeting of the National Coordination for the Anticipation of Hydrometeorological Disasters and Earthquake-Tsunami, on Wednesday (7 / 10).

Dwikorita said that from the data on the tsunami-prone area due to volcanoes occurring in parts of eastern Indonesia.

“Starting from Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, to West Papua. One of the specials is in the Sunda Strait. So that’s the potential for a tsunami in eastern Indonesia,” he said.

Therefore, Dwikorita said, the La Niña phenomenon is currently occurring from the eastern direction of Indonesia, which will have an impact on the heavy rains after November, especially in central, northern and eastern Indonesia.
