Head of the Center for Earthquakes and Tsunamis of the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) Rahmat Triyono predicts that Indonesia will not be affected megatsunami that could potentially occur in Alaska. He said the prediction was reflected in the source of the landslide.
“It seems that the impact will not reach Indonesia,” Rahmat told CNNIndonesia.com, Monday (10/20).
Rahmat said the potential cause of the glacier avalanche mega-sunami in the Barry Arm area is not facing the high seas or the Pacific Ocean. Based on the map, he saw that the source of the landslide was fortified by various lands.
Regarding geographic conditions, Rahmat assessed that the tsunami would only occur in the Alaska region.
Furthermore, Rahmat revealed that the tsunami that occurred in Alaska also depended on the volume of the landslide. He said that the tsunami becomes larger if the volume of the landslide is large.
“If the landslide material is small, then the tsunami will have a small impact,” he said.
Previously, a devastating tsunami could occur due to a landslide on a glacier in Alaska, United States. Researchers have mapped the movement and fear that the glacier’s unstable tilt is much greater than previous landslides in 2015 and 2017.
If it collapses, researchers say a tsunami could hit the entire area of Prince William Sound, Alaska. The modeling results show that the avalanche at Barry Arm can generate a tsunami of up to 30 feet.
