Liverpool are in danger of losing Virgil van Dijk for a long time. The Dutch defender had to undergo knee surgery after Jordan Pickford rubbed his leg.

The incident occurred during a Merseyside derby in the Premier League that continued at Goodison Park on Saturday (10/17/2020) WIB night. Van Dijk, who was trying to catch the ball in Everton’s penalty area, was hit by Pickford.

Having received treatment on the field, Van Dijk was ultimately unable to continue the match. He had to be retired in the 12th minute and was replaced by Joe Gomez.

A further examination revealed that the ligaments in Van Dijk’s knee were damaged. The injury forced Van Dijk to climb onto the operating table.

“Liverpool can confirm that Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery for the knee injury suffered in Saturday’s game against Everton which ended 202,” read a statement from Liverpool on its official website.

“The ligament in the center’s knee was damaged after an incident involving Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.”

Liverpool did not explain in detail how long it took for Van Dijk to be out due to knee surgery he had to undergo. However, the recovery process after ACL surgery usually takes several months.

Van Dijk’s injury is certainly bad news for Liverpool. Since he was drafted in January 2018, Van Dijk has become the main pillar of the Reds’ defense line.

Virgil van Dijk has always played Premier League matches in the last two seasons. This season, he has made seven appearances for Liverpool before the Merseyside derby.
