The father of the British Prime Minister, Boris johnson, Stanley revealed plans to transfer French citizenship after signing the trade deal Brexi.
Stanley said the decision to change citizenship was due to the fact that French blood had been in him for generations.
“It is not about being French. If I understand correctly, I am French! My mother was born in France, as was my grandfather,” Stanley said in a radio interview. RTL in French.
“For me it is a question of getting what I already have and I am very happy about that,” said the 80-year-old.
Stanley was one of the first officials to be appointed to Brussels after Great Britain joined the European Union in 1973. He is a Member of the European Parliament for the European Commission.
Unlike his son, Stanley from the beginning campaigned for Britain not to leave the European Union.
“I will always be European, that’s for sure,” he said again on French radio.
“You cannot tell the British: you are not European. Europe is more than a single market, it is more than the European Union.”
“Still, it is important to have that relationship with the EU,” he said, referring to possession of an EU passport.
Quotation AFP, Stanley’s plan to change citizenship was revealed by his daughter Rachel in a book published last March.
In the book, Rachel reveals that her grandmother was born in Versailles. He also said that if his father [Stanley] accepting French citizenship, he also wanted to do the same.
Britain and the European Union signed a Trade and Cooperation Agreement after Brexit on Wednesday (12/30). The agreement was signed a day before Britain separated from the European Union’s single market.
The deal was a welcome ending after nine months of tough negotiations between Britain and the European Union.
The 1,245-page agreement document outlines in detail the cross-section of trade, law enforcement and conflict resolution between the agreement that will separate the UK and European markets on December 31, 2020.
As of January 1, 2021, citizens cannot move freely from the UK to the European Union and vice versa.
