JAKARTA – Professor Din Syamsuddin praised PP Muhammadiyah General Secretary Professor Abdul Mu’ti, who rejected President Jokowi’s offer to be Deputy Minister of Education and Culture (Wamendikbud).

“The refusal of Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, MEd, General Secretary of PP Muhammadiyah, to become Vice Minister of Education and Culture is the right attitude. It reflects the attitude of a true member of Muhammadiyah who, among others, is not crazy, he rejects a position that is not in accordance with his ability, and positions that undermine the spirit of the organization. The reason is that they cannot carry out the mandate is only tawadhu, “said Din Syamsuddin. Okezone, Thursday (12/24/2020).

According to Din, Abdul Mu’ti is a qualified teacher and expert in education. His knowledge of education and leadership skills is very high. “The appointment of Prof. Dr. Abdul Mu’ti, MEd as Deputy Minister of Education and Culture has the tone of denigrating the great organization Muhammadiyah, the pioneer of education and the true national education movement,” said Din, who also is the president of the Pondok Labu Muhammadiyah (PRM) branch.

Din, who is the former president of PP Muhammadiyah, said that President Jokowi must have historical and national knowledge in order to show the wisdom to put someone and an organization in the right place.

“For Muhammadiyah, holding a government post is not a big problem (it’s not a big deall), because Muhammadiyah is sufficiently independent and autonomous to become a strategic and critical partner of the Government, in a proportionate attitude: willing to support the Government if it is good and correct, and not hesitate to criticize and correct if it is wrong, it deviates or it strays, “Din said.

As is known, initially circulating the name of the secretary general of the PP Muhammadiyah, he would be appointed vice minister of Education and Culture. But lately, the name Mu’ti disappeared. President Jokowi only appointed five vice ministers.

To clarify this point, Abdul Mu’ti confirmed that he decided not to join the cabinet after going through various considerations. “I feel that I will not be able to fulfill this heavy mandate. I am not the right figure for that mandate,” he said yesterday.

Mu’ti admitted that he had been contacted by the Minister of State, Secretary Pratikno and Mendikbud Nadiem Makarim. He also stated that he was willing to join if the mandate was granted. However, after measuring his own abilities, Mu’ti changed his mind and did not accept the offer. “Hopefully it is the best option,” he concluded.
