KOMPAS.com – Indonesian Ambassador to Great Britain Desra Percaya wants the government and the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) to boycott All of England.
The wish came after Desra Percaya contacted the British government, the National Health Service (NHS), Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen (President of BWF) and Adrian Christy (President of the British Badminton Federation).
The communication concerns the case of seven Indonesian representatives at the All England Open 2021 who were forced to resign by the BWF and the organizing committee on the first day of the tournament, Wednesday (3/17/2021).
The Red and White Squadron was forced to withdraw from All of England in 2021 because they were on a plane with a person who tested positive for Covid-19 on a flight from Istanbul to Birmingham.
The Indonesian team received direct instructions from the British Health Authorities (NHS) to carry out isolation for 10 days until March 23, 2021.

The controversy was what led Desra Percaya and the Indonesian government together with PBSI to communicate with related parties.
From the results of the communication with related parties, Desra Percaya concluded that the BWF and the All England 2021 committee were unable to hold tournaments during the corona virus pandemic.
The first thing Desra Percaya highlighted was how the BWF and the All England committee treated the seven Indonesian representatives after learning about the NHS email that the players had received.
Desra Percaya assessed that the BWF and the All England committee should protect the seven Indonesian representatives who had openly informed the NHS email.
However, the BWF and the committee actually appeared to neglect seven Indonesian representatives, such as not providing transportation to the hotel until they lost their hands when the British government required players to self-quarantine.

According to Desra Percaya, this is proof that BWF and the All England 2021 pantia are incompetent at holding tournaments.
As a result, Desra Percaya wants the Indonesian government and PBSI to boycott All of England to lecture the BWF and organizing committee this year.
“So maybe it is too early to boycott. However, as a fan of badminton and also a fan of Indonesian players, my answer is to boycott All England!” Desra Percaya said in a virtual press conference via the Indonesian Embassy in London. Friday (3/19/2021).
“The Indonesian team has been treated unbridled here. That is not true. I know my response is not diplomatic. However, this is my emotion and reaction,” said Desra Percaya.
“If the question about the boycott was not directed at me as a diplomat, I would be very upset. They do not provide vehicles for our players. Players are also treated like this,” said Desra Percaya.
“The logic is this, the Indonesian team is good at reporting the NHS email to the committee. What the BWF should have done is protect and defend Indonesian players,” said Desra Percaya.
“BWF should ask for an exception for Indonesian players. At least BWF has made good efforts against Indonesian players. However, this is not the case. Players were asked to resign immediately. Where is the communication?” Desra Percaya said.

Other than that, Desra Percaya said that the desire to boycott All England was her personal opinion.
Desra Percaya said that Indonesia’s attitude towards All of England after this year’s implementation will be discussed later by the government and also by PBSI.
“Regarding the boycott issue, Ricky Subagja (manager of the Indonesian badminton team) and PBSI will be more competent to respond,” Desra said.
“The Indonesian government and PBSI will discuss later to determine the attitude and the options that can be taken,” said Desra Percaya.
“For example, it is fine for All England to continue, but the points earned by becoming champions are not counted in the world player rankings. This is an option,” said Desra Percaya.
“Second, of course, there must be improvements in health protocols. They must promise that incidents like this will not happen again,” said Desra Percaya.
“If there is no such thing, then why should we join All England again? We are not short of big tournaments either. For example, like this,” added Desra Percaya.
Most recently, Ricky Subagja said that the Indonesian team will most likely return to Indonesia on Sunday (9/21/2021).
The Indonesian team was able to leave early after the government and PBSI pressured related parties to make an exception.
