jpnn.com, WASHINGTON DC – US President Joe Biden has again called on the Myanmar military to immediately relinquish power and release civilian leaders and activists detained in the coup earlier this week.
Biden said the United States was working with allies and partners to address a general takeover, in which they arrested elected leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, as well as other civilians.
“There is no doubt that the forces of democracy have never tried to override the will of the people or seek to erase a credible electoral result,” Biden said.
According to him, the transfer of power to democratically elected leaders is not negotiable.
“The Myanmar military must renounce the powers they seized and release the supporters, activists and officials they have arrested, lift restrictions on telecommunications and refrain from violence.”
Army commander Min Aung Hlaing took power on Monday and said there were irregularities in the November elections that Suu Kyi’s party overwhelmingly won. The electoral commission said the vote was fair.
Meanwhile, the White House released a statement about Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, who spoke by phone Wednesday night with the ambassador for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the 10-member bloc in which is Myanmar.
“Mr. Sullivan expressed President Biden’s deep concern regarding the coup in Myanmar and expressed his appreciation for the attention of the ASEAN countries to this crisis, and noted the importance of regional support for the immediate restoration of democracy in Myanmar. “the statement said.
