Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Indonesian Navigation Service Provider Agency (AirNav Indonesia) revealed the communication of the air traffic controller (ATC) with the pilot Sriwijaya Air SJ182 before the plane crashed in the waters of the Thousand Islands.

AirNav said his group had confirmed to the pilot when Sriwijaya Air SJ182 made a left turn that did not match the coordinates.

The chronology of the contact was relayed directly by AirNav Indonesia Chairman and Director Pramintohadi Sukarno during a hearing at Committee V DPR RI, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/3/2021) quoted from detikcom.

Pramintohadi initially revealed that Sriwijaya Air SJ182 took off from runway 25 at 2:36 p.m. WIB and had contacted ATC at an altitude of 1,700 feet.

“At 14:36 WIB Sriwijaya SJ182 took off from runway 25. Then, after passing an altitude of 1,700 feet, it contacted the Jakarta approach at a frequency of 179 Mhz and ordered the controller to go up to an altitude of 29 thousand feet following the SID Procedure or standard exit route, “Pramintohadi said at the meeting.

Pramintohadi revealed that in the middle of the lift process to 29,000 feet, or around 2:38 p.m. WIB, the Sriwijaya Air SJ182 pilot requested ATC 0.75 degrees due to weather reasons.

“Passing an altitude of 7,900 feet, SJ182 requested a heading of 0.75 degrees at ATC for weather reasons, and was allowed by ATC and was instructed to rise to an altitude of 11,000 feet,” he said.

This directive, Pramintohadi said, was answered ‘clearly’ by pilot Sriwijaya Air SJ182. According to him, ATC ordered the aircraft to rise to an altitude of 11 thousand feet because at a height of 7,900 rigid was the same plane passing Pontianak.

“We ask to go up to an altitude of 11 thousand feet because at the same altitude there is an aircraft in the same position that will also fly to Pontianak, that is, Air Asia,” he said.

Also, Pramintohadi said, when Sriwijaya Air SJ182 reached an altitude of 10,600, around 2:39 p.m. WIB, ATC asked to climb back to 13,000 feet. The Sriwijaya Air SJ182 pilot responded well to this instruction.

“During the process from 2:36 PM WIB to 2:39 PM WIB there were no reports that the plane was in an abnormal condition. So all of this happened normally,” he said.

The rarity then appeared at 14.39 WIB. Pramintohadi said that suddenly Sriwijaya Air SJ182 turned left. This incident was questioned by ATC, but there was no further response from Sriwijaya Air SJ182 until it disappeared from radar.

“Then at 14:39 WIB, Sriwijaya 182 was observed on the ATC radar screen turning left, to the northwest, which should have been right at 0.75 degrees, at 14:40 WIB the controller it confirmed the direction of SJ182, but there was no response, and it was followed. The target disappeared from the radar screen, “he said.

Pramintohadi confirmed that his party tried to contact Sriwijaya Air SJ182 up to 11 times. But that effort got no response.

“ATC tried repeatedly to call up to 11 times, then was also assisted by several other flights, including Garuda to try to reach SJ182, but there was no response,” he said.

As is known, the Sriwijaya Air SJ182 aircraft took off on January 9, 2020 from Soekarno-Hatta airport. However, after 4 minutes of take-off, the plane lost contact. Moments later, it was confirmed that the Sriwijaya Air SJ182 plane crashed in the waters of the Thousand Islands, Jakarta.
