JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The official government prohibits local governments (Pemda) and state schools from requiring students to wear uniforms with religious attributes.
The prohibition is established in the Joint Ministerial Decree (SKB) 3 regarding the use of uniforms and attributes for students, educators and educational personnel in school settings organized by local governments at the primary and secondary education levels.
The SKB was signed by the Minister of Education and Culture, Nadiem Makarim, the Minister of the Interior, Tito Karnavian, and the Minister of Religion, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas.

At SKB, the government allows students and teachers to choose the type of uniform. This means that teachers and students are free to choose to wear clothing and attributes with or without religious specificities.
Nobodym said that this Minister of SKB 3 gives teachers and students the freedom to determine the uniform they want to wear, in accordance with the applicable provisions.
As for students, parents can make decisions about the type of uniform their child will wear.
Nobody said that this SKB 3 minister only applies to public schools so it does not regulate the dress code in private schools.
“Public schools are government-run schools for all Indonesians regardless of religion, regardless of ethnicity, with any diversity. It means that everything that includes SKB 3 ministers regulates public schools, ”said Nadiem.

Meanwhile, before the minister of SKB 3 appeared, the school forced a non-Muslim student from SMKN 2 Padang, West Sumatra to wear a headscarf.
The school stated that this was a school arrangement that had been in place for a long time.
The case became known after the video of the debate between the student’s parents and the school went viral on social networks.
Shortly after the video went viral, the school apologized. The school, represented by SMKN 2 principal Padang Rusmadi, apologized for the error in implementing the school uniform policy.
“I apologize for all errors in the field of student affairs and advisory (BK) in the implementation of the uniform policy in schools,” Rusmadi said at a press conference in Padang on Friday (1/22/2021) at night.

Rusmadi said the issue will be resolved collectively and amicably. Then the students who were summoned because they did not wear the headscarf to school were able to go to school as usual.
