Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) is showing a tougher stance on Russia. In his first phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Joe Biden gave these signals.
This has raised concerns from the United States about human rights in the Kremlin country and “aggression” against Ukraine. Even so, the United States will continue to open opportunities for nuclear cooperation with Russia.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Biden expressed concern about the Russian government’s treatment of opposition members, including Alexei Navalny. Opposition leader Navaly nearly died last year from a poison blamed by the Putin government.
The situation is further complicated when Navalny returns from treatment to Russia and is arrested by Moscow. Navalny is currently in prison.
Not to mention, over the weekend, the police carried out mass arrests of people demonstrating in support of Navalny. “In addition to raising the Navalny case, Biden marks the peaceful treatment of protesters by the Russian security forces,” wrote AFP, citing Biden’s spokesman.
The telephone connection also discussed the possibility of the two countries cooperating separately on the nuclear issue. The White House said Biden and Putin had agreed to finalize negotiations for a new START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) deal.
This agreement limits both to manufacture these weapons of destruction. Where each power is only a maximum of 1,550 nuclear warheads. The above agreement will expire on February 5.
Communication between the two leaders is expected to increase stability between the two most armed countries in the world. Previously, in the era of Donald Trump, the discussion had stalled.
