Jakarta –
Thomas Tuchel is rumored to be Chelsea’s new manager following Frank Lampard’s dismissal. But there is a bad track record that could become a problem for him at a later date.
Tuchel’s work is widely known when he coaches Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. However, there were also a number of conflicts with the club’s management, which even resulted in dismissal.
With Dortmund during the 2015-2017 period, Tuchel won the DFB-Pokal trophy on May 27, 2017. However, three days after winning the title, Tuchel was released by Dortmund.
His relationship with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke at the time was already fragile. One of the factors is the transfer policy.
Tuchel reportedly opposed the exodus of Matts Hummels, Ilkay Guendogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the summer of 2016, but the club’s leadership continued.
Not only that, Tuchel also issued a controversial statement when the Dortmund vs AS Monaco match in the Champions League quarterfinals on April 11, 2017 had to be postponed after the Dortmund bus was attacked.
Tuchel wondered why the match was only postponed for one day, while his team’s psychological condition was not good. Tuchel also publicly stated that the decision to play at that time was like being forced by management on the players.
Tuchel’s outspoken nature is believed to have made Dortmund’s management attractive, so he was released at the end of the season. After being unemployed for a year, Tuchel was finally asked to join PSG in 2018.
At first everything seemed normal. As well as dominating the national scene, he also led Les Parisiens to the Champions League final in the 2019/20 season, although they ultimately lost. He even got an additional contract a year after that season.
But after that, what happened in Dortmund happened again at PSG. Tuchel disputed the transfer with the PSG board of directors, in this case the sports director, Leonardo Araujo.
He asked for a defender, but the one they gave him was Danilo Pereira, who is known as a defensive midfielder. In addition, criticism of the club’s management was repeated in front of the public.
In December, in an interview with German media Sport 1, he said that he once questioned his position at PSG, that he felt more like a politician than a coach.
A few days after the interview, on Christmas Eve 2020, Tuchel was fired. In fact, it was not until the day before that PSG had just beaten Strasbourg 4-0 in the French League.
Now, after a month of unemployment, Tuchel again faced a new job. His announcement as Chelsea manager seemed like a matter of time.
Without a doubt, signing Tuchel will generate new hope, given the quality he has. However, Chelsea must also be aware that when they name Tuchel, a conflict that has already happened may reoccur.
