Padang, CNN Indonesia –

A non-Muslim student at SMK Negeri 2 Padang, West Sumatra, refused to use hijab according to school regulations. For the application of this regulation, the Director of SMKN 2 Padang, Rusmadi, apologized.

“In handling and facilitating Jeni Cahyani’s Class X daughter’s desire to wear the school uniform mentioned in the statement letter, I apologize for all the errors of the ranks and the Student Affairs and Counseling Sector in determining the rules and procedures of student dress, “Rusmadi said at the meeting. Press in Padang, Friday (1/22).

This case went viral when Elianu Hia, Jeni Cahyani Hia’s father, uploaded a statement he made about the case. He also shared a video containing recorded meetings with the school.

Jeni made a statement that was also signed by her parents that she was unwilling to wear the headscarf as stated in school regulations.

Jeni’s parents also shared a video chat between school representatives on Facebook. The video was answered by 3.6 thousand accounts, 3.4 thousand shares and received 5.5 thousand comments.

The video received public attention because there were reports that non-Muslim students were forced to wear Muslim clothing.

Rusmadi said the student continues to attend school as usual until now.

“Before, Jeni went to school as usual. We hope that errors, mistakes and confusion of information on social media can be resolved in a spirit of unity and diversity,” said Rusmadi.

The head of the West Sumatra Information and Communication Office, Jasman Rizal, stated that the West Sumatra Provincial Government has never established a rule that requires non-Muslim students to dress as Muslims at school. If there was a rule like that, he thought the rule was made by the school.

In response to this problem, the West Sumatra Office of Education sent an investigation team to SMKN 2 Padang. The head of the West Sumatra Office of Education, Adib Alfikri, said that if the team later finds irregularities that do not comply with the rules, then his party will prosecute the school.

“If there are rules, practices, actions outside the provisions, I will take a firm stance. We have sent the team to school. The team is working to retrieve data and information. The fate of the principal (SMKN 2 Padang) depends on the results of the investigation, “Adib said.

Regarding the incident, Adib said that his party would inspect SMA / SMK throughout West Sumatra to see whether or not there is such a rule (rules that require non-Muslim students to wear Muslims). If schools are found to be implementing the rules, your party will ask school administrators to review the rules in question.

Regarding Jeni, Adib ordered the SMKN 2 Padang organizers to ensure Jeni’s comfort to go to school and to ensure that there is no discrimination against the student.

“If later this also causes confusion, we from the office will prosecute (school administrators) according to the rules,” he said.
