China ‘takes revenge’ on Trump Cs, says Biden

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Relations between the United States and China appear to be heating up again. The reign of President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. or Joe Biden responds to China’s action to sanction one of the former officials of the Donald Trump administration, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Emily Horne, a spokeswoman for Biden’s National Security Council, said China’s sanctions against Pompeo were “unproductive and cynical.”

“Imposing these sanctions on inauguration day appears to be an attempt to increase partisan divisions,” Horne said in a statement to Reuters.

“Americans on both sides should criticize this cynical and unproductive move. President Biden hopes to work with leaders on both sides to position the United States to defeat China.”

On Biden’s inauguration day on Wednesday (1/20/2021), China announced sanctions against Pompeo and 27 other top Trump administration officials.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Pompeo and others were accused of “planning, promoting and executing” things that interfere with internal affairs.

Chinese authorities have barred former officials and close family members from entering the country, and restricted companies associated with them from doing business in the country.

Before his term ended, Pompeo had declared that China had committed genocide against Uighur Muslims.

“This so-called determination by Pompeo is nothing more than paper,” said a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry in response. “This American politician is known for lying and cheating, becoming a laughingstock and a clown.”

China has repeatedly rejected allegations of abuse in the Xinjiang region, where a United Nations panel said at least 1 million Uyghurs and other Muslims have been detained in camps.

On the other hand, the foreign minister chosen by Biden to replace Pompeo, Antony Blinken, said he agreed with Pompeo’s assessment of China.

He said at his Senate confirmation hearing that “undoubtedly” China was the most significant challenge to the United States of any country, and that he believed there was a very solid foundation for building a bipartisan American policy against Beijing.
