Kristen Antoinette Gray was deported from Indonesia. There are three reasons that led the Bali Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to expel the US citizen.

Based on a written statement from the Balinese Ministry of Law and Human Rights on Tuesday (1/19/2021), the case began after a viral tweet from the Twitter account @kristentootie. The tweet contains an invitation for foreigners to move to Bali during the COVID-19 pandemic. Bali was also claimed to provide comfort to LGBTQF people.

The information then reached the Bali Ministry of Law and Human Rights. They immediately took the following steps:

1. Verification of incoming data for foreigners on behalf of Christian Antoinette Gray who entered Indonesia on January 21, 2020 at 23:04:54 WITA through I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Also, Kristen Antoinette Gray extended her residence permit at TPI Denpasar Class I Immigration Office on December 22, 2020, which is valid until January 24, 2021.
2. After verification by the Immigration Officer, a Christian sponsor, Antoinette Gray, with the initials IGW, was found in the Ubud area and a field verification was carried out on January 18, 2021.
3. On January 19, 2021, the Immigration Officer made a sponsor call for Kristian Antoinette Gray to attend TPI Denpasar’s Class I Immigration Office for further examination.

According to the results of the investigation, the Bali Ministry of Law and Human Rights said that Kristen Gray was suspected of disrupting the community. One of them is Kristen Gray’s statement on LGBT.

“1. LGBTQF (queer friendly) that in the province of Bali provides comfort and is not a problem; 2. Easy access to Indonesian territory during the pandemic,” wrote the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Because of this, Kristen Gray allegedly violated Article 75, paragraph 1 of Law No. 6 of 2011 on immigration.

Immigration Officers have the authority to carry out Immigration Administrative Measures against foreigners in Indonesian territory who engage in dangerous activities and who are reasonably suspected of endangering security and public order or who do not respect or disobey laws and regulations.

Another motive that led the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to deport Kristen Gray was the alleged business activity through the sale of e-books and the installation of Bali tourist consulting fees. For this reason, Kristen Gray may be subject to sanctions in accordance with article 122 letter a of Law Number 6 Year 2011 on Immigration:

Any Foreigner who knowingly abuses or participates in activities that do not conform to the intention and purpose of granting him a Life Permit that is granted.
