JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The mystery of the possible head of the National Police to replace General (Pol) Idham Azis, who will retire on February 1, 2021, has finally been revealed.
Initially, the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) handed over the names of five general commissioners or three-star policemen to President Joko Widodo.
The names of the police chief candidates recommended to President Joko Widodo have gone through a selection process by Kompolnas.

Jokowi’s choice
With his prerogative as president, Jokowi chose Listyo Sigit as the only candidate for chief of the National Police. The president also submitted Listyo’s name to DPR on Wednesday (1/13/2021) for processing.
Various considerations for Jokowi when choosing Listyo were conveyed by the chief expert of the Presidential General Staff Office (KSP) Donny Gahral Adian.
“Yes, of course all the formal requirements are met. Other than that, of course, the factors of integrity, competence, professionalism,” Donny told Kompas.com, Wednesday.

In addition to these factors, Donny said, Jokowi also considered the National Police candidate’s ability to synergize with stakeholders, both internal and external to the government.
On the other hand, Jokowi and Listyo are known to have had close ties before. Listyo served as the chief of police for Surakarta in 2011, where Jokowi was the mayor of Solo.
Then after Jokowi was elected president in 2014, Listyo also became his aide.

Directed by Idham Azis
After Listyo was selected as a candidate for chief of the National Police, Idham Azis invited his staff to support Listyo until he was appointed later.
“I invite all my colleagues to join together in supporting the candidate for chief of the National Police, Komjen Listyo Sigit Prabowo,” Idham said in his statement on Thursday (1/14/2021).
“Until the network implementation process proper and tight test that will take place next week until the inauguration of the new Chief of Police can function successfully and without problems and will not encounter any obstacles, ”he said.

Idham also hopes his staff will remain strong to support President Jokowi’s decision.
He asked his staff to believe that Jokowi’s decision to choose Listyo must have gone through several careful considerations.
“I hope that we all remain strong, united and support the policies of the President of the Republic of Indonesia as the top leader of the National Police for us to implement and secure them,” said Idham.
Inner Drive Challenge
According to a police observer from the Institute for Security and Strategic Studies (ISESS) Bambang Rukminto, Idham Azis’s statement showed that the internal police were not strong after Listyo’s election.
Bambang believes that there has been outrage within the National Police following Listyo’s election. The reason is that Listyo, who graduated from the Police Academy in 1991, will “jump” to several of his superior forces.

He also considered that it would be a challenge for Listyo if he was later chosen to unify the inner Bhayangkara Corps.
“Not only to unite existing groups, but to unite in a vision to build the foundations for the future of the National Police. Will the Police be only the guardian of the interests of the regime or the interests of the state?” Bambang said when was contacted by Kompas.com, on Friday (1/15/2021).
Bambang hopes Listyo can make a breakthrough in the form of policy changes within the National Police if he is elected.

In its implementation, according to him, Listyo’s idealism will also be put to the test.
“The challenge is a strong push from various interests and factions internally. And here Mr. Listyo’s integrity and idealism will be put to the test, and he may not resist these temptations,” he said.
