Video of the Manado Town Square (Mantos) shopping center, Manado, North Sulawesi, affected by a viral flood on social networks. The flood turned out to be a tidal wave near the site.

This news was confirmed by the Chief of Public Relations of the North Sulawesi Regional Police, Kombes Jules Abraham Abast. The flooding is believed to be due to extreme weather and high surf.

“Yes, the info (flooding in Mal Mantos) is like that, perhaps by chance the waves of the sea are tidal and rise extremely,” said Jules, when contacted, on Sunday (1/17/2021).

Jules said the location of the Mantos Mall turned out to be on the coast, so it was submerged by the tides. Even so, he confirmed that the incident that allegedly occurred this afternoon was just the tidal phenomenon.

“Perhaps because of the location of Mantos which is on the edge of the sea due to the sea that was previously stored, the hope is that it is just an ordinary natural phenomenon due to the rising tides,” he said.

Jules also asked the public to be vigilant regarding the tides. People who live around the coast are also asked to stay away for a while.

“Hopefully it will remain safe and people on the coast are expected to stay away from disaster-prone places,” he said.

Based on circulating video, flooding was seen in the parking lot of a shopping center in Manado. You can see that the water conditions are quite high in the place and the wind is also blowing quite fast.
