MALANG, KOMPAS.com – In addition to releasing hot avalanche clouds, Mount Semeru in East Java also released lava avalanches on Saturday (1/16/2021) at 17:24 WIB.

Nia Haerani, head of the West Region Volcano Mitigation Branch at the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), said the lava avalanche slid 500 to 1,000 meters toward Curah Kobokan, Lumajang Regency.

Meanwhile, the warm avalanche clouds rolled about 4 kilometers in the same direction.

“On January 16, 2021 at 17:24 WIB, another avalanche hot cloud with a slip distance of 4 kilometers occurred in the direction of Besuk Kobokan,” Nia said in a written statement Saturday night.

“Lava avalanche activity also occurs with a slide distance of between 500 and 1,000 meters from Jongring Seloko crater towards Besuk Kobokan,” he continued.

Meanwhile, based on the results of visual, instrumental and hazard monitoring, Mount Semeru is still on alert.

“Based on the results of the visual and instrumental monitoring, as well as the potential hazards, the activity level of Mount Semeru is still set at level II on alert,” he explained.

Residents are prohibited from carrying out activities within a radius of 1 km.

Raditya Jati, head of the Center for Disaster Data, Information and Communication at the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), said that at level II alert status, people are advised not to move within a radius of 1 kilometer from the crater of Mount Semeru and at a distance of 4 kilometers from the opening of the crater in the southern sector. -Southeast.

“In addition, people are asked to always be on the lookout for hot clouds from avalanches, falling lava and lava along rivers or valleys originating from the top of Mount Semeru,” he said.
