23 dead after Covid-19 vaccine, Pfizer’s effectiveness dubious

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – One of the Scandinavian countries, Norway, has confirmed that there have been 23 cases of death of the elderly (elderly) after using the pfizer vaccine.

As a result, Chinese health experts called on Norway and other countries to stop using the mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine produced by companies like Pfizer, especially among the elderly, as quoted in globaltimes on Saturday (1/16/21 ).

The development of the new mRNA vaccine is rushed and has never been used on a large scale for the prevention of infectious diseases, and its safety has not been confirmed for large-scale use in humans, said a Chinese immunologist.

The death incident in Norway also shows that the efficacy of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine is not as good as expected, experts say.

“So far, 13 of them have been evaluated. Common side effects may have caused serious illness in frail older people,” says the Norwegian Drug Administration on its website.

All of the deaths occurred in frail elderly patients in nursing homes. All were over 80 and some were over 90, Norwegian news outlet NRK reported.

Two COVID-19 vaccines are used in Norway, Comirnaty, from BioNTec / Pfizer and Moderna. The vaccine has been developed with mRNA technology and has received provisional approval in the European Union, according to the agency.

Norway launched a mass vaccination campaign in late December, and older residents and nursing home residents were offered early vaccinations, including those over the age of 85.

The Norwegian Medicines Agency acknowledged that the study that formed the basis for the provisional approval of the vaccine involved very few people over the age of 85, and little is known about how side effects will affect this age group, but said:

“We assumed that the side effects would be largely the same in the elderly as in those over 65,” said the Norwegian Drug Administration.

Chinese experts say the incidence of death must be carefully assessed to understand whether the death was caused by a vaccine or another pre-existing condition in these people.

Yang Zhanqiu, a virologist at Wuhan University, told the Global Times on Friday that the incident of the deaths, if proven to be due to the vaccine, suggests that the effects of the Pfizer vaccine and other mRNA vaccines are not as good. as expected.

The main goal of administering the mRNA vaccine is to cure the patient. The mRNA vaccine was originally designed to produce human cells to produce proteins to trigger an immune response; then the immune response can protect the person from becoming infected if the actual virus enters the body.
